JP Caruso is the top-rated pocket passer in Palm Beach County. On Wednesday night, the Palm Beach Gardens quarterback made one college happy.

Caruso (6-1, 200) committed to Appalachian State, choosing the Mountaineers over Air Force, Akron, FAU and several other FBS and FCS programs. He visited Appalachian State’s camp last month and plans to enroll early in January.

“I wanted to make my decision early,” Caruso told ESPNWestPalm.com. “They were my second offer and they were on me ever since.”

Appalachian State’s long been an FCS powerhouse, winning three consecutive FCS national titles from 2005-07 and stunning Michigan on its home field in 2007. This fall, the Mountaineers begin their transition to FBS football. They’ll become full Sun Belt Conference members in 2014, when Caruso will be a freshman at the Boone, N.C., school. Appalachian State will become bowl eligible in 2015.

Caruso threw for 1,046 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior at Gardens, helping the Gators reach the Class 8A regional quarterfinals. Using the NFL quarterback rating metric, Caruso had a 94.1 rating in 2012.
